Are you a patient or soon-to-be patient? He is all of the information you need to know about staying at Westmead Rehabilitation Hospital.

Your Stay

When you are admitted to Westmead Rehabilitation Hospital for treatment you may notice some differences in comparison to acute care hospitals including: 

  • Independence is encouraged - you will be asked to do as much for yourself as possible in order to practice your skills
  • Nurses may assist you by encouraging you to do things for yourself rather than doing them for you
  • Relatives and friends can be involved in your program in consultation with your rehabilitation team.
  • Your physiotherapist may be give you exercises to practice skills outside of normal working hours.
  • An activity program is available to encourage you to keep active during the day, including weekends
  • Tai Chi is available first thing in the morning to help you warm up for the day
  • Comfortable clothes are worn
  • Meals may be served in the Dining Room

 

Fees and charges

If your hospital stay is covered by private health insurance or the department of Veteran’s affairs, the account will be sent directly to the relevent organisation.

If it is covered by workers compensation or third party insurers, approval must be sought prior to admission.

Should a patient wish to pay independently, the fee structure will be explained before admission.

Patients will be informed on admission of other expenses that may not be covered by their funds by one of our administration staff.

Any Health Fund Excesses and Co Payments must be paid on the day of admission.

Other expenses must be paid at the time of discharge.    

 

 

What to bring

  • Casual clothes that are comfortable for therapy
  • Walking shoes
  • Swimsuit
  • Night attire, dressing gown and slippers (if staying as an inpatient)
  • Personal toiletries
  • We encourage you leave anything of value at home, including jewellery, credit cards, and cash.  
    We are unable to accept responsibility for the loss of valuables or money
 

 

Other Services

Personal Laundry
This is to be completed by family members. The Hotel Services Manager can be contacted for special circumstances. 

Housekeeping
Rooms and bathrooms are cleaned daily. Towels are changed daily. Should you require extra, please ask our Housekeeping Staff. The Dining room is available for you and your guests for lunch and dinner. Your visitors may enjoy a meal with you by simply asking them to order and pay for their meals 24hours in advance at reception. For weekend visitor meals, please order by Friday. The lounge area is available to you at any time.

Hairdresser
A hairdresser is available to visit you in your room. This service is offered at the patient’s personal expense. Appointments can be made  at the Nurses’ Station or by speaking with the nursing staff.

Podiatrist
A Podiatrist is available to visit you here at the hospital. This service is offered at the patient’s personal cost, and appointments can be arranged with the help of the nursing staff.

Chaplaincy Services
A Chaplain is available to visit you. This service is available on a Friday afternoon. If you would like a visit, please see reception staff  to book a time. If you wish to see a member of the clergy and your local minister is unavailable, please contact the nursing staff or reception and a minister will be contacted on your behalf.

Going Home

We ask that patients discharge by 9:30am. It is your responsibility to arrange Transport to take you home. If you anticipate any problem with transport the discharge  nurse can assist you with arangments.

Please arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you when you are discharged.

Please ensure you have all your belongings before discharge including: 

  • X-rays
  • Medications (including personal and discharge medications)
  •  Discharge instructions including follow-up appointments
  •  All belongings and valuables.

 

Follow-up Phone call:
Once you return home, a member of staff may call you to follow-up on how you are managing after your stay.

 

 

Day Programs

Following your stay with us you may wish to consider further rehabilitation. Your Rehabilitation Physician may refer you to our multi-disciplinary Day Therapy Programs at Westmead Rehabilitation Hospital.  The Day program requires a minimum of two therapy disciplines.

The disciplines include:  Physiotherapy, Hydrotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Balance classes, Speech Therapy, Dietetics,Clinical Psychology, Cardiac Rehabilitation and Spasticity Management Service.

 The cost of these services is covered by your health fund or insurer but they may require you to pay a co-payment or excess. These programs will help to ensure optimal recovery and continuity from your inpatient rehabilitation program. To find out more please consult your therapist or doctor.

 

“Your Heart Matters”- Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

The aim of the ‘Your Heart Matters’ Program is to provide patients with heart conditions a   

 program to improve their exercise tolerance and activities of daily life. 

  The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program operates weekly. The program will include Exercise and Education on behaviours that can minimise risk factors. The program is co-ordinated and monitored by Exercise Physiologists and Specialists

 

The Spasticity & Neuro Rehabilitation Service (SNRS)

 This service is available for In-patients and Day patients. This program is tailored for those that  may have had traumatic brain injury or stroke that has resulted in deformities, poor gait and  contractures. The program operates fortnightly and is coordinated by Neuro- Rehabilitation Specialists and  Occupational Therapists with consultation, assessment and the possibility of botulinum toxin injections. Intervention to improve function and quality of life will be monitored by our Neurological Rehab Specialists

Privacy of Information
Westmead Rehabilitation Hospital respects and upholds your rights to privacy protection under the Privacy Amendment Act 2000 and the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002. The objective of our privacy policy is to achieve a balance between maintaining your privacy and allowing a flow of information necessary to deliver optimum health care.
Why And How Do We Collect Information?
We collect your personal information to provide you with treatment and advice. All information is collected directly from you although we may need to collect information from
other health professionals who have treated you.
 
How Is Your Information Protected?
We will take all reasonable steps to ensure the information we collect about you is stored securely.
•Paper-based records are held in a delegated storage facility.
•Electronic records are contained in a secure environment.
We will destroy personal information after our legal obligations to retain the information have expired.
 
How Can You Access Your Information?
You may request access to your medical record by writing to:

We will endeavour to provide you with a suitable range of choices as to how you may access your information, (eg post or collection). Access to personal information may be declined in special circumstances, such as where giving access would put you or another person at risk of harm.
 
If you believe that personal information the hospital holds about you is incorrect, then you may request amendment of it. If we do not agree that there are grounds for amendment, then we will add a note to the personal information stating that you disagree with it.
